The Church at Hunningley commenced its history in a very humble way. In 1861 a small group of Christian men and women met in a disused building which had formerly been used as a weaving room. This was classed as a ‘Preaching Room’ as an auxiliary to Salem Chapel on Blucher Street, Barnsley.
In 1870, the fellowship became independent from Salem and moved into new premises when the new Zion Chapel opened for worship.
As the congregation continued to grow, the Church began to look for new, larger premises and in 1882 the main section of present building was opened and became the new home of Ebenezer Church. An extension to this building was deemed necessary to accommodate the expanding congregation and Sunday School, and in 1908 the new classrooms were opened.
As a result of the move from the Weaving Room, through to the present ‘Ebenezer’ building, two separate dates have been used for the anniversary celebrations. In early days, 1861 was considered to be the start of the Church. Later, the anniversary of the opening of Ebenezer in 1882 has been celebrated. Consequently, a number of Anniversary booklets have been produced over the years which describe in great detail the development of the Church.
